Athletic aims to control the game through a high press and quick transitions using a 5-2-3 formation. This lineup focuses on winning the ball high up the pitch and immediately looking to hit the opposition in behind. The team relies on defensive solidity to absorb pressure before using the width of the pitch to launch attacks.
Cirnigliaro operates between the posts to manage the defensive line. A back five provides a deep defensive block when needed, with Lo Nigro sitting central to command the area and win headers. Sferrazza and Montefusco SX act as the wide centre backs, providing cover when the wing backs push high. Vitello and Slojkowski function as attacking wing backs, tasked to spread wide and provide crosses. This unit works to protect the central zone and ensures they are not caught out when the team shifts side to side.
The midfield consists of a two man unit with Diogo and Leggio. These two must work hard to cover the ground and link the back five to the front three. Leggio and Diogo act as the engine, looking to win the second ball and drive forward with the ball to carry it into the attacking third. They must stay compact to prevent the opposition from playing through the lines, often dropping back to support the defenders when under heavy pressure.
Athletic uses three attackers to stretch the defence. Dos Santos acts as the lone striker, looking to hold up the ball and find the feet of his teammates. Iezzi and Esposito play as wide wingers who cut inside to create goal scoring chances. They look to isolate one on one situations against full backs or make runs in behind the defensive line. This front three works in unison to press from the front, forcing the opposition to play long balls.
One major advantage for Athletic is the ability to create wide overloads when Vitello and Slojkowski overlap the wingers. This creates extra passing options in the final third. The formation also offers great compactness when defending in a mid block, making it very difficult for opponents to find space between the lines. The team is well equipped to break quickly once the ball is won in the middle of the pitch.
This 5-2-3 formation provides a balance of defensive stability and attacking width. It is best suited for matches against teams that play with high defensive lines or rely heavily on central passing.
