United States relies on a heavy defensive base and quick transitions using a 5-2-3. This formation is built to sit deep and absorb pressure before hitting the opposition in behind. The team aims to remain compact to deny space in the middle and force the opposition to play wide and away from the central danger.

Kingsbury but it won't sits in goal to anchor the defensive unit. The back five features Coffey, Davidson, and Girma in the central roles. Coffey holds the center while Davidson and Girma provide cover on either side. Fox and Nighswonger act as attacking wing backs to provide width and depth across the pitch. These wide players must track back to ensure the team maintains a narrow defensive block when defending.

The midfield utilizes a double pivot with Heaps and Yohannes. These two players work to shield the defense and win the second ball in the center of the pitch. Heaps and Yohannes connect the defensive line to the attack by playing through the lines. They move to press the opposition in a mid-block and recycle possession to keep the team organized and ready for the next phase.

In the attacking phase, the team uses three attackers across the front. Rodman and Wilson operate as wide wingers who stretch the defense, while Macario plays as a lone striker. Macario works to hold up the ball and find the feet of the oncoming midfielders. Rodman and Wilson look to cut inside to create chances or wait to receive crosses from the wing backs. The front three press the opposition back line to force a long ball and win it back high up the pitch.

One major strength of this formation is the ability to create wide overloads when Fox and Nighswonger push high up the pitch. The three central defenders allow the team to maintain compactness when defending deep. This lineup also allows for a high speed of transition once the ball is won to exploit spaces left behind the opposition's defenders.

The United States uses this 5-2-3 to remain difficult to break down while threatening on the break. This formation works best against opponents that play with a high line and dominate possession.
