Starting Lineup

Armani · Montiel · Pezze/Mq · Diaz · Casco · Castaño · Borja · Pity · Rojas/Subiabre · Galoppo/Enzo · Mastan

River aims to play a vertical game through a 5-2-3 formation. This lineup is built to win the ball high up the pitch and hit the opponent quickly on the break. The team looks to use the width provided by the wing backs while keeping a compact block when the ball is lost.

Armani stays between the posts to organize the defense. The back five consists of Casco as the left wing back and Montiel as the right wing back. In the middle, Castaño sits as the central defender to win the header and clear the lines. Diaz acts as the left centre back to cover the space behind Casco, while Pezze/Mq operates as the right centre back to assist Montiel. This unit can shift from a narrow defensive block into a high line to squeeze the space and set the offside trap.

The midfield relies on a two man pairing of Mastan and Galoppo/Enzo. Mastan works to connect the defensive and attacking lines by finding the feet of the attackers. Galoppo/Enzo provides the engine to drive forward with the ball and press aggressively to win the ball high. Together, they must protect the space in front of the back five and ensure they do not get bypassed by a quick passing team.

Up front, River uses three attackers to stretch the defence. Borja acts as the lone striker, using his presence to hold up the ball and wait for support. Pity plays on the left and can cut inside to create chances, while Rojas/Subiabre stays on the right to provide width or work in combinations. The wing backs, Montiel and Casco, often overlap the wingers to create overloads. This lineup is designed to create runs in behind the opposition back line through quick transitions and cutbacks from the byline.

This formation offers significant advantages in transition. The speed of the wing backs allows the team to attack in wide areas very quickly once the ball is won. Additionally, the presence of three central defenders makes the team very hard to break down when they drop into a low block. The combination of a strong central anchor like Castaño and the energy of the midfield pairing allows for effective pressing in waves to win the second ball.

The 5-2-3 lineup provides a solid foundation for a team that wants to counter at pace. It is a perfect choice for facing teams that dominate possession but leave space behind their high defensive line.
