Milan seeks to play with extreme verticality to catch opponents off guard. This 4-2-4 formation is built to strike fast in transition and pin the opposition defense back. The primary goal is to use the width and the power of the front four to force mistakes high up the pitch.

Donnarumma stands between the posts to command the area. The defensive unit operates with a flat back four featuring Gabbia (c) and Buongiorno as the central pair. Gabbia (c) is the captain and acts as the leader to organize the line while Buongiorno provides cover. Kalulu and Udogie play as full backs to manage the wide areas and track back when the ball is lost. The unit works to keep the distance between the defense and midfield small.

The midfield relies on a double pivot consisting of Tonali and Pobega. These two must work hard to cover the ground left by the attacking players. Tonali is a carrier who can drive forward with the ball to connect the lines. Pobega works to protect the defense and wins the second ball to keep the pressure on. They serve as the engine that allows the rest of the Milan lineup to push forward.

An aggressive front line of four attackers occupies the final third. Leao and Felix operate on the flanks, with Leao often looking to cut inside to use his dribbling. Zaniolo and Gimenez play as a central partnership to occupy the two center backs. This two-striker formation allows for constant runs in behind and creates chaos in the box. The wingers spread wide to stretch the defense, allowing the strikers to find space between the lines.

This formation offers immense speed of transition when the ball is won back high up the pitch. By using four attackers, Milan creates a constant threat of isolating wide players in one on one situations. The ability to press in waves from the front four makes it difficult for opponents to build out from the back.

The 4-2-4 is a high risk, high reward formation designed for pure attacking output. It is best suited for games where Milan needs to break down a low block or exploit a high defensive line through quick strikes.
