Milan plays with a heavy, vertical identity using this 2-4-4 formation. The lineup aims to pin the opposition back and win the ball high up the pitch through constant, aggressive pressure. This formation is built to overwhelm teams in their own half and attack with massive numbers across the pitch to create chances.

Donnarumma uses his shot-stopping to protect the small defensive unit. Gabbia (c) and Buongiorno act as a narrow pair of central defenders in a high line. Because there are only two defenders, they must step up to engage attackers early and set the offside trap. Gabbia (c) leads the line and tries to sweep behind a high line while Buongiorno works to win the header in aerial duels. The defensive unit must stay compact and rely on the midfield to prevent direct runs in behind.

The midfield features a double pivot and two wide players. Tonali and Pobega operate in the center to control the middle of the pitch. Tonali uses his passing range to find teammates and protects the two center-backs. Pobega looks to carry the ball forward and win the second ball to keep the momentum. On the flanks, Kalulu and Udogie act as wide midfielders. They must track back to help the defence but also overlap to provide width.

Milan employs four attackers to stretch the defence using two forwards in a partnership and inverted wingers who cut inside. Leão and João Félix operate as wide players, with Leão using his speed to cut inside and João Félix looking to combine in tight spaces. Zaniolo and Gimenez play as a strike partnership in the middle. Zaniolo acts as a physical presence to hold up the ball, while Gimenez looks to make runs in behind. The front four trigger a press from the front to force the opposition to go direct.

This formation offers significant tactical advantages. The team creates wide overloads and massive numbers in the final third to overwhelm opponents. The ability to press in coordinated waves makes it very hard for the opposition to play out from the back. This constant pressure allows AC Milan to win the ball high up the pitch and break quickly.

This 2-4-4 lineup is a high-risk tactic designed for total offensive dominance. It is best suited for matches where Milan needs to break down a team that sits deep in a low block.
