Starting Lineup

FC Porto focuses on high pressing and quick transitions through a 3-4-3 formation. This lineup is built to win the ball back high up the pitch and use verticality to punish opponents. The goal is to squeeze the space in the middle and use the width of the pitch to stretch the defence once the ball is recovered.

Diogo stays between the posts to organize the back line. Marcano acts as the central defender in a back three, while Nehuen and Otávio operate as wide centre-backs. Nehuen covers the right side to prevent crosses, and Otávio provides cover on the left. This defensive unit often stays high to support the press, requiring them to be ready to track back if the opposition plays long balls.

The midfield works as a central block with Eustáquio and Varela acting as the two central players. Varela works to win the second ball and provides physical presence, while Eustáquio looks to carry the ball forward and connect the defence to the attack. Martim and Moura operate as wide midfielders who provide much of the width for FC Porto. They push up to support the front three but must track back to help the wide centre-backs when defending deep.

In the attacking phase, the team uses three attackers. Samu acts as the lone striker, working to hold up the ball and fight for headers. On the flanks, Pepê plays as an inverted winger on the right to cut inside, while William operates on the left to provide width or look for runs in behind. This front line presses the opposition back line aggressively to force mistakes. They look to combine in tight spaces or use the wingers to isolate defenders one on one.

This formation offers significant advantages in terms of wide overloads when Martim and Moura push high. By using a three man defence, the team can maintain compactness when defending and transition quickly into attack. The presence of three attackers allows the team to pin the last defender and create constant threat in the final third.
