The three defenders work to squeeze the space and maintain a high line to keep the team compact.

A three man midfield provides the engine for Ajax to control the center of the pitch. Soren Lerby sits as the single pivot to shield the defense and win the second ball. Wesley Sneijder and Wim Jonk operate as the two central midfielders who connect the defense to the attack. Sneijder uses his passing range to find players between the lines, while Jonk helps to carry the ball forward and drive into the half spaces.

The attacking unit uses four forwards to stretch the defense. Van Basten and Zlatan Ibrahimovic work as a partnership in the center, with Ibrahimovic using his aerial strength and technical skill to hold up the ball. Brian Laudrup and Nwankwo Kanu play as wide attackers, often cutting inside to create chaos. This front line is designed to attack in combinations and make constant runs in behind to punish any mistakes.

This formation offers significant tactical advantages, particularly the ability to press high in coordinated waves. By having four players right at the opposition back line, Ajax can trigger a press immediately upon losing the ball.
