The midfield functions as a three-man unit designed to control the tempo and connect the defense to the attack. Rijkaard sits in the single pivot role to shield the defenders and break up play. He provides the foundation that allows Wesley Sneijder and Wim Jonk to operate further up. Sneijder uses his passing range to find attackers, while Jonk acts as a carrier to drive the ball forward. Together, they work to recycle possession and ensure the team maintains control in the middle of the pitch.

In the attacking phase, Ajax employs four forwards to pin the opposition back. Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Van Basten lead the line as a two-man strike partnership, combining to hold up the ball and finish chances. Ibrahimovic uses his aerial strength and physicality to disrupt defenders, while Van Basten finds space between the lines. On the flanks, Michael Laudrup and Finidi provide extreme width. Laudrup likes to cut inside to create chances, while Finidi stays wide to stretch the defence and deliver crosses into the box.

One major advantage of this formation is the ability to create massive numerical superiority in the final third. With four attackers and three midfielders pushing forward, Ajax can easily overwhelm a standard back four. The team also benefits from the speed of transition, as the high positioning of the forwards allows them to press the goalkeeper and defenders immediately after losing the ball.
