Starting Lineup

BOGARDE · BLIND · DE BOER · RIJKAARD · SEEDORF · DAVIDS · LITMANEN · FINIDI · OVERMARS · KANU · VAN DER SAR

Ajax plays a heavy possession based style of football using a 3-4-3 formation. This lineup is built to dominate the ball and control the tempo through central combinations. The team looks to control the rhythm of the game by keeping the ball in tight spaces and using short passes to move up the pitch.

VAN DER SAR starts between the posts to manage the back line. The defensive unit operates with a back three where BOGARDE acts as the right centre-back and DE BOER sits as the left centre-back. BLIND occupies the middle role to guide the defenders and organize the line. This back three can stay compact or step up to squeeze the space when Ajax wins the ball high up the pitch. The defenders must be ready to cover for each other if a runner breaks through the line.

The midfield is built around a three-man midfield with a carrier and a creative presence. RIJKAARD sits in front of the defence to shield the back three and intercept passes. Beside him, DAVIDS and SEEDORF act as engine players who can drive forward with the ball or press aggressively to win the ball high up the pitch. LITMANEN plays as an attacking ten behind the striker to connect the midfield to the attack. These players work together to recycle possession and find the feet of the attackers.

Ajax uses three attackers across the front to stretch the defence. KANU acts as the lone striker who can hold up the ball and bring others into play. On the flanks, FINIDI and OVERMARS operate as wide wingers who look to cut inside and create goal scoring chances. The team attacks through combinations between the forwards and the attacking midfielder. This setup creates many opportunities for runs in behind or for the wingers to receive the ball in one on one situations.

One major advantage for Ajax is the ability to create numerical superiority in the central areas through the movement of LITMANEN and the midfield trio. The team can also use the wide players to stretch the defence and create space for late runs into the box. When the ball is lost, the players are positioned to press in pairs to win it back quickly.

This 3-4-3 formation is designed to control games through superior ball retention and technical ability. It is best suited for matches against opponents that sit deep and allow Ajax to move the ball through the lines.
