Starting Lineup

PSG relies on a heavy defensive presence to transition into rapid attacks, using a 5-3-2 formation. This lineup is built to sit deep and strike quickly when space opens up in the final third. The team looks to absorb pressure before using the pace of their forwards to punish opponents on the break.

Lama guards the goal as the last line of defense. Ahead of him, a back five operates in a narrow defensive block. Guérin and Ricardo act as the central defenders, with Guérin covering the space while Ricardo focuses on winning the header and physical duels. Fernandez sits as the right-sided central defender to provide additional cover. On the flanks, Pilorget and Roche act as attacking wing backs, pushing high to provide width while ensuring they track back to maintain the defensive unit.

The midfield works as a three-man midfield with a carrier. Rai sits centrally to shield the defense and recycle possession when the ball is won. To his left, Ronaldinho uses his legendary dribbling style and incredible vision to drive forward with the ball and connect the defensive and attacking lines. Susic plays on the right side to help press the ball and win the second ball in the middle of the pitch. This trio works to squeeze the space between the lines and transition the play from the back five to the front two.

PSG utilizes two forwards in a partnership to lead the line. Pauleta operates as a pressing centre-forward to harass the opposition back line, while Weah looks to exploit space by making runs in behind. They combine in tight spaces to move the ball forward quickly. When Roche or Pilorget carry the ball forward, they aim to cross or deliver early to the two attackers. The forwards often drop deep to link up play with the advancing midfielders, creating a central presence that forces the opposition to stay compact.

One major advantage of this lineup is the ability to maintain compactness when defending in a low block. The five defenders and three midfielders make it very hard for opponents to play through the lines. PSG also gains speed of transition by using the wide areas through Roche and Pilorget to stretch the defence once the ball is recovered. This allows the team to move from a defensive posture to an attacking one in a matter of seconds.
