Galatasaray Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Tafarell · Boey · Bülent Korkmaz · Ujfalusi · Hakan Ünsal · Suat Kaya · Melo · Sneijder · HAGİ · İcardi · Hasan ŞaşGalatasaray plays with a heavy focus on defensive solidity and rapid transitions using a 5-3-2. This lineup is built to sit deep and then hit in behind on the transition. The team relies on a compact block to deny space to the opposition.
Tafarell guards the goal. The defensive unit operates in a back five with Suat Kaya, Ujfalusi, and Bülent Korkmaz occupying the central positions. Ujfalusi and Bülent Korkmaz work to win the header and clear the lines. Boey plays as an attacking wing back on the right to overlap the winger. Hakan Ünsal acts as the left wing back to provide width. The back five defend zonally to protect the middle of the pitch and stay compact in a mid-block.
The midfield consists of a three-man unit. Melo acts as the primary ball winner to shield the defence and win the second ball. Sneijder looks to progress through the thirds with his passing range and vision. He connects the defensive and attacking lines. HAGİ plays as the attacking ten, using his passing range to play through the lines and find the feet of the forwards.
In the final third, Galatasaray uses two forwards in a partnership. İcardi works to find space and uses his clinical movement to arrive late into the box. Hasan Şaş plays as the second forward to press from the front and stretch the defence. The wing backs, Boey and Hakan Ünsal, push up to provide width and whip it in. The attack relies on quick combinations to break the line and create chances.
One advantage of this formation is the ability to create wide overloads when Boey and Hakan Ünsal push up. The team can also compress the midfield to deny the pivot of the opposition. Another strength is the speed of transition when Sneijder or HAGİ can switch play to the wingers to catch the defence out.
This 5-3-2 formation creates a very difficult block for opponents to break down. It is best suited for matches against high possession teams where Galatasaray can counter at pace.
