Starting Lineup

Armani · Montiel · Pezzella · M. Quarta · Acuña · Castaño · Aliendro · Mastantuono · Driussi · Subiabre · Matias Rojas

River focuses on a vertical style of play that relies on quick breaks, utilizing a 5-2-3 formation. This lineup is designed to stay compact while looking to exploit spaces in behind the opposition defense. The main goal is to win the ball and push forward immediately to catch the opponent.

Armani protects the goal and organizes the defensive unit. The back five features Castaño in the center to mark the striker. Pezzella provides aerial strength and covers the space behind his teammates. M. Quarta acts as a ball playing defender who can play short from the back to start attacks. Acuña and Montiel function as attacking wing backs. They push high to provide width but they must track back to maintain a narrow defensive block when the team sits deep.

The midfield consists of a two-man pairing of Aliendro and Mastantuono. Aliendro works to shield the defense and win the second ball. Mastantuono is tasked to carry the ball forward and connect the defensive and attacking lines. They must press aggressively in a mid-block to win it back high up the pitch. This duo helps to recycle possession when the game slows down.

The attack is led by Driussi as a lone striker. He works to hold up the ball and link up play between the lines. Subiabre and Matias Rojas act as the wide attackers. While Subiabre pulls wide to stretch the defense, Matias Rojas looks to cut inside to create a central presence. They aim to hit in behind on the transition and find space through the lines. The front three press from the front to force a long ball.

A significant strength of this River lineup is the ability to create wide overloads. When Montiel and Acuña overlap the wingers, they create a numerical advantage on the flanks. The team also benefits from the speed of transition once the midfield wins possession. This allows them to counter at pace before the opposition can reset.

This 5-2-3 formation is a defensively solid identity built for rapid counter attacks. It is most effective when playing against teams that push their full backs very high and leave space out wide.
