River seeks to control the pitch through heavy central presence and high pressing in a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup is built to dominate the middle of the park and use a dense midfield to squeeze the space between the lines. By crowding the central areas, the team aims to win the ball back high up the pitch and immediately push forward to catch the opposition off balance.

Franco Armani acts as the last line of defense, working behind a very narrow back two. Díaz and Pezzella form the central pairing, acting as ball playing defenders who must step up to engage attackers early. Because there are only two central defenders, they must be ready to cover wide areas or sweep behind a high line if the press is bypassed. The defensive unit relies on the midfield to drop back and protect the center, preventing the opposition from playing through the lines.

The midfield is a massive five man block designed to overwhelm the opponent. Kranevitter acts as the single pivot to shield the defense and recycle possession. On either side, Acuña and Montiel operate as central midfielders who drive forward with the ball and help transition play. Simón and Mastantuono occupy the half spaces as attacking midfielders, looking to create chances and arrive late into the box. This heavy midfield presence allows River to control the tempo and ensures there is always a player available to receive the ball and progress through the thirds.

In the final third, the team utilizes three attackers to stretch the defense. Borja serves as the central striker, acting as a focal point to hold up the ball and link up play with the advancing midfielders. Subiabre and Lencina operate as wide attackers, looking to cut inside and create overloads in the channels. The attacking unit is designed to press the opposition back line from the front, forcing long balls that the central defenders can intercept. This creates constant pressure and allows for quick combinations in tight spaces.

One major advantage of this formation is the numerical superiority in midfield, which makes it very difficult for opponents to keep the ball. The heavy central crowding allows River to win the second ball frequently and maintain control. Another strength is the ability to press in coordinated waves, with the three forwards and five midfielders all triggering a press to deny the opponent time on the ball.

This 2-5-3 formation provides a heavy central presence intended to dominate possession and control the rhythm of the match. It is best suited for games where River can pin the opponent back and exploit the space left behind a high defensive line.
