Atlético Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Mandava · Molina · Giménez · Le Normand · Gallagher · de Paul · Sørloth · Koke · Griezmann · J. Álvarez · OblakPrioritizing a heavy press and rapid transitions, Atlético operates with a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup is built to win the ball high up the pitch and immediately look to exploit spaces behind the opposition defense. The goal is to overwhelm the middle of the field while maintaining enough defensive solidity to survive on the counter.
Jan Oblak starts between the posts to organize the defensive unit. In front of him, Le Normand and Giménez form a narrow back two. These central defenders act as ball playing defenders who must be ready to step up to intercept long balls or drop back to cover the space if the press is bypassed. They must be dominant in the air and ready to clear the lines during sustained pressure. This small defensive unit relies on high intensity to keep the ball away from the striker.
The midfield is a dense block consisting of five players. Molina acts as a defensive midfielder on the right to protect the flank, while Mandava holds the left side. Gallagher and de Paul operate as the central pair, with Gallagher using his high pressing intensity to hunt for the ball and de Paul driving the ball forward to connect the lines. Koke plays as an attacking ten behind the striker, finding pockets of space to create chances and recycle possession in the final third. This heavy midfield presence allows Atlético to dominate the center of the pitch.
Up front, the team employs three attackers to stretch the defense. Sørloth acts as a target man to hold up the ball and win headers, providing a focal point for the attack. J. Álvarez plays as a wide winger on the left, looking to cut inside and create, while Griezmann operates on the right side. Griezmann uses his passing range and vision to find runners or play through the lines. These attackers press the opposition back line aggressively to force mistakes and quick turnovers.
One major advantage of this formation is the numerical superiority in the midfield, which makes it very difficult for opponents to play through the center. Another strength is the ability to press high in coordinated waves, using the front three and the five midfielders to squeeze the space. This creates many opportunities to win the ball back high up the pitch and hit in behind on the transition.
Atlético uses this setup to dominate possession in the central areas and strike with pace. This formation is best suited for games where the team needs to pin the opponent back and force them into mistakes.
