Starting Lineup

Montiel · Pezzella · Paulo Diaz · Acuña · Castaño · Meza · Aliendro · Mastantuono · Colidio · Driussi / Subiabre · Armani

River prioritizes defensive solidity and quick transitions through a 5-3-2 formation. This lineup is built to absorb pressure and hit teams on the break with speed. The identity centers on staying compact and finding space behind the opposition defense.

Armani starts in goal to command the area. The defensive unit works with a back three where Castaño sits in the center to hold the line. Pezzella operates as the right center back to win the header and cover the space, while Paulo Diaz defends the left side. Montiel and Acuña play as attacking wing backs to provide width, but they must track back to form a five man line when the team sits deep. This unit works together to defend zonally and force opponents wide.

The midfield functions as a three man midfield with a carrier. Meza and Aliendro occupy the central roles to shield the defense and recycle possession. Aliendro often looks to press in a mid block to win the second ball and move the play forward. Mastantuono operates as an attacking ten to connect the lines. He looks to receive on the half turn and play through the lines to find the forwards in space.

In the attacking phase, River uses two forwards in a partnership. Colidio and Driussi work together to stretch the defence. Colidio works to hold up the ball to allow others to move forward, while Driussi looks to make runs in behind to exploit space. Montiel and Acuña push high to provide width and whip it in to the box. This movement creates chances through quick combinations and allows the team to hit in behind on the transition.

This formation provides high levels of compactness when defending. By sitting in a low block, River can deny the turn to attackers and force a long ball. The team also creates wide overloads when Montiel and Acuña overlap the midfield. Mastantuono helps to split the defence with a through ball, making it hard for opponents to maintain their lines.

River utilizes this 5-3-2 to remain difficult to break down while staying dangerous on the counter. This formation is best suited for games against teams that play with a high line and heavy possession.
