Baumann acts as the lone man in goal, needing to be ready to sweep behind a high line. The defensive unit is minimal, consisting of a central pair of Østigård and Kabak who must be dominant in the air and quick to recover. These two central defenders act as the last line of defense, often required to cover large amounts of territory because the rest of the team is pushed so far forward. They must stay compact to prevent long balls from breaking the line.

The midfield is massive and serves as the engine room for Hoffenheim, featuring a dense block of six players. Prass and Stach work in a double pivot to shield the defense and recycle possession. Kaderabek provides additional cover in this deep area to ensure the two defenders are not left isolated. Further up, Bischof and Samassekou operate in the half spaces to connect the defensive and attacking lines. Kramaric plays with more freedom, often finding pockets of space to create or drive forward with the ball. This heavy midfield presence allows the team to win the second ball and control the tempo.

The attack utilizes a two man partnership in the front line with Hlozek and Tabakovic. Tabakovic acts as a target man to hold up the ball and allow others to join the move. Hlozek works alongside him, looking to make runs in behind or play one-two combinations to pull defenders out of position. The team builds the attack through short passes in the midfield before looking to hit in behind on the transition. The forwards are expected to press from the front to force a long ball from the opposition.

One major tactical advantage of this formation is the massive numerical superiority in midfield, which makes it very hard for opponents to play through the center. The heavy presence of Bischof, Samassekou, and Kramaric allows the team to press in waves and win it back high up the pitch. This creates immediate chances for Hlozek and Tabakovic to attack a disorganized defense.
