The midfield uses a single pivot to shield the back three. Schuster sits in front of the defense to deny the opposition pivot and protect the central defenders. Martín Vázquez plays as an attacking midfielder in the hole to connect the midfield to the two strikers and find the feet of the striker.

Real Madrid relies on a two-man partnership at the front. H. Sánchez and Butragueño work together to pressure the opposition back line. Butragueño is known for his runs in behind and his ability to play off the shoulder of the last defender. They combine in tight spaces to pull defenders out of position, which allows Martín Vázquez to arrive late into the box. The forwards press from the front to trigger a press in a mid-block and win the ball back high up the pitch.

A primary strength is the numerical superiority in the center of the pitch. With five players occupying the middle, the team can compress the midfield and win the second ball. The presence of Gordillo and the central players helps to stretch the defence when they switch play to the flanks. This lineup also provides incredible speed of transition once the ball is won back high up the pitch, allowing for quick strikes.
