Flamengo focuses on a direct style of play designed to exploit spaces in transition using a 5-3-2 formation. Rodrigo Caio and Pablo Mari act as the central pillars, with Wilian Arão providing additional cover to maintain a narrow defensive block. The wide defenders, Rafinha and Felipe Luís, act as attacking wing backs to provide width. Rafinha covers the right flank, while Felipe Luís pushes up on the left to support the attack.

The midfield works as a three man midfield with a carrier to connect the lines. Gerson acts as the single pivot to shield the defence and recycle possession. He sits in front of the three defenders to intercept passes and protect the zone. Éverton Ribeiro operates as an inverted eight, finding pockets of space to link the defensive and attacking phases. De Arrascaeta plays as an attacking ten behind the strikers, looking to create chances and deliver through balls to the front two.

Flamengo uses two forwards in a partnership to lead the line. Gabriel and Bruno Henrique operate as a strike duo that looks to exploit runs in behind the defence. Gabriel plays as a mobile forward who can pull defenders away from the center, while Bruno Henrique uses his strength to hold up the ball. They often press the opposition back line to force a long ball. The wing backs, Rafinha and Felipe Luís, provide width by getting to the byline to whip it in or cut it back for the central players.

This formation offers several tactical advantages. The back three provides great compactness when defending deep, making it very hard for opponents to find gaps. Having Gerson and De Arrascaeta allows the team to find numerical superiority in the middle of the pitch during build up. The presence of Rafinha and Felipe Luís allows for quick wide overloads, which can stretch the defence and create space for the strikers to work in one on one situations.
