Starting Lineup

PSG intends to play a very direct and vertical game using a 4-2-4 formation. This lineup is built to hunt for the ball in the opposition half and strike with extreme speed. The main focus is on winning it back high up the pitch to catch the opponent off balance.

Trapp acts as the last line of defense in goal. The back line operates as a zonal line with Kehrer on the right and Kurzawa on the left. Kehrer and Kurzawa need to provide width by pushing up the pitch. In the middle, Lugano and Diallo defend the central zone. Lugano is tasked to win the header during set pieces and Diallo must cover the space when the full backs move forward. They must hold the line to ensure they do not get caught by a through ball.

The midfield is a double pivot featuring Krychowiak and Stambouli. Krychowiak plays the role of the sitting midfielder to shield the defense and intercept passes. Stambouli acts as the carrier to drive forward with the ball and link the back four to the front four. They must work to compress the midfield and prevent the opposition from playing through the lines to reach the defense.

The attacking front line is composed of four players designed to stretch the defence. Ekitike and Kolo Muani operate as a central striking partnership. Ekitike can hold up the ball while Kolo Muani looks to make runs in behind. Jesé and Guedes provide the width as wide wingers on the flanks. Jesé and Guedes aim to get to the byline and deliver early crosses or cut it back into the box. This high line of four is meant to press from the front and force the opposition to play long.

One strength of this PSG lineup is the capacity to press in coordinated waves. With four players high up the pitch, the team can win it back high up the pitch very effectively. Additionally, the formation allows for rapid speed of transition. When the ball is won, Jesé and Guedes can quickly spread wide to exploit the flanks and create crossing opportunities.
