The midfield relies on a double pivot consisting of Neves and Xhaka. Neves works to shield the defence and recycle possession, while Xhaka connects the defensive and attacking lines with his wide passing range. These two players must work hard to cover the massive spaces left when the full backs push forward. They are tasked to intercept passes and win the second ball to ensure the team can transition from a defensive block back into an attacking state.

In the attacking third, Arsenal uses two central forwards in a partnership of Ozil and Aubameyang. Aubameyang provides the pace to hit in behind on the transition, while Ozil acts as a second striker in the hole to link the midfield to the attack. On the flanks, Mahrez operates as an inverted winger on the right to cut inside, and Chiesa plays on the left to provide width and direct runs. This front four is designed to create runs in behind and exploit the spaces between the opposition full backs and centre backs.

This 4-2-4 formation offers Arsenal the advantage of heavy pressure in the final third. By keeping four players high, they can press in pairs to force a long ball from the opponent. The presence of Mahrez and Chiesa on the wings allows for wide overloads when the full backs overlap, creating constant threats through crosses and cutbacks.
