Lecce focuses on being defensively solid through a 4-5-1 formation. This lineup is built to play a game of control by sitting deep and waiting for the opposition to commit bodies forward before they can counter at pace. The goal is to keep the team compact to prevent the opponent from playing through the middle and to force them into wide areas.
Under the command of 1 in goal, the defense holds a flat back four. 5 and 6 act as the central defenders, where 6 works to cover while 5 looks to win the header and clear the lines. They must be able to defend zonally to maintain the defensive block. On the flanks, 2 and 3 play as wide defenders who must track back to defend against crosses. These players work to show the striker outside and protect the central zone.
The midfield is the core of the Lecce lineup, using a five-man midfield. 8 and 4 form a double pivot to shield the defence, with 4 acting to deny the pivot of the opposition and 8 looking to intercept passes. Ahead of them, 11, 10, and 7 connect the lines. 10 acts as the link to drive forward with the ball, while 11 and 7 move into the half-spaces to press aggressively and win the ball back high up the pitch.
In the attacking phase, the team utilizes a lone striker, 9, to lead the front line. This player must act as a pressing centre-forward to trigger a press from the front and disrupt the opposition back line. As the team attacks in transition, the wide players 11 and 7 look to carry the ball forward to support the move. The striker will often try to hold up the ball to allow 10 or the others to arrive late into the box or make runs in behind.
This formation offers Lecce clear tactical advantages like numerical superiority in the central areas. By crowding the middle, they can compress the midfield and squeeze the space, making it very hard for opponents to play through the lines. Another strength is the speed of transition, as the team can win the second ball and break quickly to catch the opposition off guard.
This 4-5-1 formation is a hard block that is very difficult to break down. It is best suited for games against teams that hold a lot of possession where Lecce can counter at pace.
