Starting Lineup

Tagliafico · Medina · Romero · Molina · Lautaro · Garnacho · J. Álvarez · E. Fernández · Mac Allister · Palacios · Martínez

Argentina relies on a high press and a very vertical identity using a 5-2-3. This formation is built to win the ball high up the pitch and move it quickly to the front three to catch the opposition off guard. The team looks to squeeze the space in the middle and use the width of the pitch through the wing backs to stretch the defence.

Martínez guards the goal and directs the defensive line. The formation uses a back five with Romero, Medina, and E. Fernández in the centre. Romero and Medina are expected to win the header and cover the space behind the wing backs. E. Fernández sits centrally to hold the line and pick up runners. On the flanks, Molina and Tagliafico act as attacking wing backs to provide width. They push high to support the attack but must track back to maintain a narrow defensive block when the team loses possession.

The midfield operates as a double pivot with Mac Allister and Palacios controlling the centre. Mac Allister drops deep to receive on the half-turn and play through the lines to find the attackers. Palacios works to protect the back five and win the second ball to keep play moving. This pair must press in a mid-block to deny the pivot of the opposition and ensure the connection between the defence and the front three remains strong.

Up front, Argentina utilizes three attackers to pin the last defender. Lautaro leads the line as a pressing centre-forward who works to force a long ball from the opposition. Garnacho and J. Álvarez play as wide attackers who look to cut inside and combine in tight spaces. The wingers often pull wide to create space for Molina and Tagliafico to overlap the wide players. This movement allows the team to deliver early crosses or cut it back from the byline for players to arrive late into the box.

One major strength of this lineup is the ability to create wide overloads. When Molina or Tagliafico push up, they create a two on two situation against opposition full backs. Argentina also shows great speed of transition. By winning the ball high, Mac Allister and the wingers can break quickly to catch a high line out of position. The defensive block remains very difficult to break down due to the depth provided by the three central defenders.

This 5-2-3 formation provides a balance of defensive solidity and rapid offensive movement. It is a formation best suited for games against teams that hold a lot of possession and require a disciplined unit to stop.
