Chelsea looks to control the game through central dominance and verticality in a 3-5-2. This formation is built to play through the lines and use a high press to win the ball back in advanced areas. By packing the middle of the pitch, the team aims to dictate the tempo and transition quickly once possession is regained.

The goalkeeper starts the build up from the back. In front of them, a back three provides a solid base. The central defender holds the line, while the RCB and LCB act as wide centre backs who can step up into midfield to create an overload. This unit is designed to defend zonally and cover the space behind the wing backs. The defenders must be ready to squeeze the space when the team pushes up, ensuring they can play out from the back with composure.

A three man midfield with a single pivot sits at the base of the formation. The CDM shields the defense and acts as the primary anchor to stop counter attacks. Ahead of them, the LAM and RAM operate in the half spaces to connect the defense to the attack. The LCM and RCM act as wing backs, providing immense width. These two roles are vital as they must cover the entire flank, dropping back to form a five man defense when out of possession and pushing up to support the attack when Chelsea has the ball.

The attack relies on a partnership between a second striker and a false nine. The RS plays as a false nine, dropping deep into midfield to pull defenders out of position and link up with the midfielders. This movement creates space for the LS, who plays as a second striker, to make runs in behind the defensive line. The two forwards work in close combinations, often using the space created by the dropping striker to find pockets of room. They press the opposition back line to force mistakes and turnovers.

Chelsea gains a massive advantage through numerical superiority in the central areas. By using a three man midfield and a dropping striker, the team can easily overwhelm opponents who play a standard two man midfield. Another strength is the ability to create wide overloads. When the wing backs push high, they work in tandem with the wide forwards to stretch the defence and create crossing opportunities. This setup makes the team very difficult to play through centrally.

This 3-5-2 formation provides a heavy central presence and strong defensive coverage. It is best suited for matches against teams that play with narrow midfields where Chelsea can exploit the wide areas.
