BUFFON guards the goal and organizes the defensive line. The back five operates as a cohesive block with BARESI, NESTA, and SCIREA occupying the central positions. BARESI and NESTA serve as ball playing defenders to start attacks, while SCIREA provides the necessary cover to sweep behind the line. On the wings, MALDINI and FACCHETTI act as attacking wing backs. They push up to provide width but must track back to maintain the narrow defensive block when the ball is lost.

The midfield is composed of a single pivot and two central players. PIRLO sits in front of the defense to act as a deep lying playmaker who can switch play and find the feet of the striker. RIVERA and S. MAZZOLA occupy the spaces in front of him. The former drives forward with the ball to carry the play into the final third, while S. The wide overloads created by MALDINI and FACCHETTI force the opposition to pull wide, leaving space in the middle.
