Starting Lineup

Daniele MASSARO · Hernan CRESPO · Jean Pierre PAPIN · Demetrio ALBERTINI · Thomas HELVEG · Marek JANKULOVSKI · Enrico ALBERTOSI · Mark van BOMMEL · David BECKHAM · Leonardo BONUCCI · Brian LAUDRUP

Milan focuses on a vertical style of play built around a 5-2-3 formation. This lineup aims to win the ball back high up the pitch and move quickly toward the opposition goal. The goal is to use the width provided by the wing backs to stretch the defence and create space for the three attackers to exploit.

Enrico Albertosi guards the goal as the last line of defence. The back line works as a five man unit with Demetrio Albertini sitting in the middle of the defensive block to sweep behind the others. Leonardo Bonucci acts as a right centre back to defend the zone while Mark van Bommel holds the left side. Thomas Helveg operates as an attacking wing back on the right to provide width, whereas Marek Jankulovski plays as the left wing back to overlap the winger. This group defends zonally to maintain a compact shape and protect the central areas.

The midfield consists of a two man pairing tasked with connecting the defence to the attack. David Beckham operates in the right central midfield role, using his famous passing range to switch play or find runners. Brian Laudrup plays as the left central midfielder to drive forward with the ball and link play between the lines. These two must work hard to cover the space left by the wing backs and win the second ball when the team presses high.

Milan utilizes three attackers across the front to pin the last defender. Hernan Crespo acts as the central striker to hold up the ball and fight for headers. On the flanks, Daniele Massaro plays as a left winger to support the attack, while Jean Pierre Papin operates as a right winger to cut inside and find goal scoring opportunities. The front three press from the front to force a long ball and prevent the opposition from playing out from the back.

This formation offers significant advantages in transition and wide overloads. The presence of Thomas Helveg and Marek Jankulovski allows Milan to create numerical superiority on the flanks by overlapping the wingers. Additionally, the midfield pairing of Beckham and Laudrup provides the ability to bypass the midfield with direct balls to the front three.

Milan relies on a strong defensive block and quick counter attacks to catch opponents off guard. This formation is best suited for matches where the team needs to defend deep and strike quickly in transition.
