Starting Lineup

Kawashima · Morishige · Yoshida · Nagatomo · Uchida · Hasebe © · Yamaguchi · Honda · Kagawa · Osako · Okazaki

Japan looks to play a high press and vertical game using a 3-4-3 formation. The team relies on quick transitions and high intensity to win the ball back high up the pitch. This lineup is built to stretch the defence through wide attackers while maintaining a strong central presence to control the middle of the park.

Osako stands between the posts to organize the defensive unit. The back line consists of a back three with Honda acting as the central anchor. Okazaki plays as the left centre-back to cover the space while Kagawa operates as the right centre-back. These three must hold the line and stay compact to prevent opponents from playing through the lines. When the team plays out from the back, the defenders must be ready to step up and squeeze the space.

The midfield is composed of a four man unit that connects the defence to the attack. Hasebe (C) operates as the captain in the left central midfield role to shield the defence and manage the tempo. Nagatomo plays on the right side to drive forward with the ball, while Yamaguchi provides support in the middle. Uchida operates in an advanced role as an attacking midfielder to play through the lines and find pockets of space. This group works to win the second ball and recycle possession quickly to keep the pressure on.

The attacking line features three players across the front to pin the last defender. Morishige plays on the left wing and Yoshida occupies the right wing, both looking to cut inside and create chances. Kawashima acts as the lone striker to hold up the ball and lead the press from the front. The wingers look to isolate a one-on-one wide or deliver early crosses into the box. This front line works to create runs in behind and combine in tight spaces to break the opponent.

Japan offers several tactical advantages with this setup. The three attackers and the attacking midfielder create numerical superiority in the final third to overwhelm the opposition. The team can also use wide overloads when the midfielders push up to support the wingers. This ability to press high in coordinated waves makes it difficult for opponents to build play from the back.

This 3-4-3 formation is built for a high intensity style of play. It is best suited for games where the team needs to dominate possession and win the ball back quickly in the opponent half.
