Starting Lineup

Kawashima · Morishige · Yoshida · Nagatomo · Uchida · Yamaguchi · Hasebe © · Honda · Okazaki · Osako · Ōkubo

Japan aims to control matches through high pressing and quick transitions in a 3-4-3 formation. This lineup relies on aggressive winning of the ball high up the pitch to catch opponents out of position. The team seeks to use the width of the pitch to stretch the opposition, creating gaps for vertical passes into the forward line.

Osako stands between the posts to command the area and act as the first point of distribution. A back three consists of Okazaki, Honda, and Ōkubo who defend in a narrow defensive block. Honda acts as the central anchor to win the second ball, while Okazaki and Ōkubo cover the wide spaces to prevent crosses. This unit is designed to sit deep or step up to trigger a press depending on where the ball sits.

The midfield works as a four man unit to dominate the center of the park. Hasebe, the captain, acts as the single pivot to shield the defence and recycle possession. Yamaguchi and Nagatomo operate in the half spaces to connect the lines, with Nagatomo often pushing to provide width. Uchida plays as an attacking ten behind the striker to drive forward with the ball and find pockets of space. Hasebe uses his passing range to find teammates and control the tempo.

An aggressive front three leads the attack with Kawashima operating as a lone striker. Kawashima works to hold up the ball and link up with the midfield. Morishige and Yoshida act as inverted wingers who cut inside to create goal scoring chances. They look to isolate defenders in one on one situations or deliver early balls into the box. The forwards press from the front to force a long ball from the opposition.

Japan gains a massive advantage through numerical superiority in the midfield during build up play. The way Uchida and the wide midfielders move allows the team to create wide overloads. This formation also provides great flexibility to shift between a mid block and a high press to squeeze the space. This ability to win the ball back high up the pitch makes them very dangerous on the break.

This 3-4-3 formation focuses on high intensity pressing and rapid verticality. It is best suited for matches where Japan needs to dominate possession and break down deep blocks.
