GERETS and HEINTZE act as attacking wing backs who push high up the pitch to provide width, while the central trio works to keep the defensive line compact.

The midfield works as a double pivot consisting of LINSKENS and VAN AERLE. These two players are tasked with winning the second ball and connecting the defence to the attack. LINSKENS and VAN AERLE must cover large areas of the pitch to stop counter attacks and move the ball forward quickly to the front three. They act as the engine room to drive the team up the pitch.

In the attacking phase, PSV uses three forwards. KIEFT acts as the target man to hold up the ball and allow others to join the play. GILLHAUS and VANENBURG operate as wide wingers who look to get to the byline or cut inside to find space.
