Real Madrid looks to strike with lethal speed through a 5-2-3. The identity of this lineup is built around quick transitions and vertical play. This formation allows the team to stay compact and then hit the opposition on the break.

Courtois stands in goal to manage the defensive unit. The back five uses a central trio of Asencio, Tchaumini, and Rudiger to protect the middle. Rudiger is a dominant presence in the air and uses his strength to clear lines. Garcia and Valverde play as attacking wing backs on either side. Valverde uses his immense engine to cover the entire right flank, while Garcia pushes up to provide width on the left. The central defenders stay deep to sweep behind the wing backs if they get caught high.

In the center of the pitch, Modic and Bellingham form a double pivot. Modic looks to control the tempo and recycle possession to find teammates. He can drop deep to pick up the ball from the center backs. Bellingham acts as a carrier who drives forward to bridge the gap between the defense and the attack. He must press aggressively to win the ball high and make late runs into the box to support the strikers. This duo works to squeeze the space in the middle and deny the pivot of the opposition.

The attack features three attackers across the front. Mbappe leads the way as a pressing centre-forward who looks to find space in behind. Vini jr. and Rodrygo operate as wide attackers. Vini jr. loves to cut inside from the left to create goal scoring chances, while Rodrygo stretches the pitch from the right. They look to build play through the thirds and then break quickly once they win the ball. The wingers often try to get to the byline to whip it in for Mbappe or pull wide to isolate defenders in one on one battles.

A major advantage for Real Madrid is the ability to create wide overloads when the wing backs join the attack. The presence of three central defenders ensures the team remains hard to break down in a low block. Additionally, the speed of transition allows the team to exploit gaps left by attacking opponents.

This 5-2-3 formation is a counter attacking machine. It is most effective when facing teams that dominate possession and push their defenders high up the pitch.
