Starting Lineup

Inter seeks to dominate through heavy central presence and rapid transitions using a 2-5-3 formation. This lineup is built to control the middle of the pitch and use high intensity to disrupt the opposition before hitting them on the break. The Inter tactical identity relies on a dense midfield block to win the ball back and immediately feed the front three.

J. César sits between the posts to organize the defense. The back line operates as a narrow duo with SAMUEL and LÚCIO acting as the two central defenders. SAMUEL provides physical presence while LÚCIO acts as a ball playing defender to start attacks. This small defensive unit must stay compact and step up together to maintain a high line, relying on quick recovery runs if the opposition breaks through the central block.

A massive five man midfield provides the engine for the team. ZANETTI and MAICON operate as defensive midfielders who protect the two central defenders, while T. MOTTA and CAMBIASSO act as two inverted eights to link the play. T. MOTTA uses his high pressing intensity to win the ball in tight spaces, while CAMBIASSO works to recycle possession. SNEIJDER plays as an attacking ten behind the striker, acting as the primary creator who searches for passes to break the line. This midfield unit is designed to compress the middle and deny the opponent any space between the lines.

The attack features three players across the front to stretch the pitch. PANDEV plays as a wide winger on the left, while ETO'O operates as an inverted winger on the right to cut inside. MILITO acts as the lone striker and target man, holding up the ball to allow the midfielders to arrive late into the box. The front three press from the front to force a long ball from the opposition. This configuration allows the team to move from a mid-block into a lightning fast attack through combinations in the final third.

This formation offers significant numerical superiority in midfield, making it very hard for opponents to play through the center. The wide players and the central attacking ten create constant passing lanes for SNEIJDER to exploit. Inter can also switch play quickly to isolate ETO'O or PANDEV in one on one situations against opposing full backs.
