Accrington focuses on a defensive identity to stay compact and hit teams on the transition, utilizing a 5-4-1 formation. This lineup is built to sit deep and deny space between the lines, making the team very difficult to break down through the middle. KANOUTE guards the goal while the back line functions as a narrow defensive block. SENNA and ASPAS act as the central defenders to defend the box and win headers, while DE LA PEÑA provides additional cover in the central area. FRAN and ED play as attacking wing backs, tasked with providing width when the team has the ball and tracking back to form a five man line when defending. This defensive unit works to squeeze the space and force the opposition into wide areas.

The midfield operates in a flat four to maintain a mid-block. DFC at right central midfield and DFC at left central midfield look to protect the centre and win the second ball. LTI on the left and LTD on the right cover the wide channels to prevent crosses and support the wing backs. These four players must shift together to keep the lines tight, with the central pair looking to intercept passes and carry the ball forward during a break.

POR acts as a lone striker who must hold up the ball to allow the midfield to move up the pitch. The attacking plan relies on POR to pin the last defender and create space for runners. When Accrington wins the ball, the wing backs FRAN and ED push high to stretch the defence. The team looks to move the ball quickly to the flanks to find a cross or a cutback to POR or the arriving midfielders.

One major advantage of this formation is the compactness when defending, which makes it very hard for opponents to play through the middle.
