Starting Lineup

paterson · hume · cirkin · o'neil · ballard · enzo · jobe · roberts · mayenda · isidor · mundle

Sunderland plays with high intensity and heavy verticality. This team relies on a 4-2-4 formation to pin the opposition back. The main goal is to win the ball high up the pitch and use the four attackers to overwhelm the back line immediately.

In goal, paterson keeps watch over the defense. The back line is a flat back four featuring cirkin at left back and hume at right back. Both cirkin and hume are tasked to overlap the wingers when the team moves forward. o'neil and ballard form the central pair, where ballard acts as a dominant presence in the air while o'neil looks to cover the space behind the high line. Every player must stay compact to avoid being caught on the break.

The midfield consists of a double pivot with enzo and jobe. Because there are only two in the center, enzo must sit deep to shield the defense and recycle possession. jobe is the engine who drives forward with the ball to link the defensive and attacking lines. This pair needs to be incredibly disciplined to prevent the midfield from being bypassed. They work to win the second ball and quickly find the front four.

The attacking unit is very aggressive with four players across the front. mundle and roberts act as wide wingers, with mundle looking to cut inside and roberts to pull wide and stretch the defense. In the center, mayenda and isidor operate as a partnership of two forwards. They are expected to press from the front to force a long ball from the opposition. mayenda and isidor often look to make runs in behind or hold up the ball to allow the wingers to arrive late into the box.

One major advantage for Sunderland is the ability to create wide overloads when the full backs push up. The formation also offers incredible speed of transition because the four attackers are already positioned high up the pitch. By having mundle, roberts, mayenda, and isidor so close to the goal, the team can strike quickly before the opposition can drop into a low block.

This 4-2-4 formation is built for high pressing and rapid verticality. It is best suited for games against teams that play a high line and can be punished by pace in behind.
