Starting Lineup

Internacional relies on a heavy central presence to control the tempo of the game through a 2-7-1 formation. This lineup aims to dominate the middle of the park by crowding the central areas and using a massive midfield block to suffocate the opponent. The goal is to keep the ball in the central zones and use the abundance of passing options to move up the pitch.

Clemer stays between the posts to act as the last line of defense. The defensive unit is very thin with only two central defenders, Bolívar and Índio, tasked with protecting the goal. They must play with a very high line to manage the massive gap between them and the midfield. Bolívar and Índio have to be perfect in their positioning to cover the space behind them, as there are no wide defenders to provide cover if the opposition breaks through the center.

The midfield is the engine room for Internacional and contains seven players. F. Eller and Ceará act as a double pivot to shield the two central defenders and win the second ball. In front of them, Jorge Wagner and Edinho operate in the half spaces to help recycle possession and link the play. Tinga, Alex, and R. Sóbis sit even higher as attacking midfielders to create chances and press the opposition. This massive block allows the team to compress the midfield and make it very difficult for opponents to play through the center.

Fernandão leads the line as a lone striker. He acts as a target man to hold up the ball and bring the three attacking midfielders closer to the goal. The attack relies on the movement of Tinga, Alex, and R. Sóbis to make runs in behind or arrive late into the box. Instead of using wide wingers, the team looks to use short passes and quick combinations in tight spaces to split the defense. The forwards must press the opposition back line to force a long ball and regain possession quickly.

This formation offers huge numerical superiority in the middle of the pitch. By having seven players in the center, Internacional can easily control the game and make it hard for the opponent to find passing lanes. The team can also use this density to press in a mid-block and win the ball back high up the pitch.
