Inter relies on a vertical and aggressive style of play, utilizing a 2-5-3 formation to overwhelm opponents. Francesco Toldo acts as the last line of defense, sitting behind a very aggressive back two. Laurent Blanc and Fabio Cannavaro form the central defensive pairing, where they must play as ball playing defenders to move the team forward. Cannavaro relies on his reading of the game to cover space, while Blanc provides the strength to win the header and clear the lines. Because there are only two defenders, they must stay compact to prevent being caught out when the midfield pushes high.

The midfield is a dense block designed to squeeze the space in the center. Giuseppe Baresi operates in the middle to connect the defense and attack, often dropping to help the defenders when needed. Luigi De Agostini and Christian Panucci act as a double pivot to shield the back two and win the second ball. In the half spaces, Roberto Baggio and Youri Djorkaeff operate as two tens who look to play through the lines. Baggio uses his passing range to find teammates, while Djorkaeff works to carry the ball forward into dangerous areas.

Inter attacks with three players across the front to stretch the defense. Roberto Boninsegna acts as the central striker to find the feet of the striker and hold up the ball. Karl-Heinz Rummenigge plays as a wide winger who cuts inside to find goal scoring opportunities, while Diego Milito operates on the opposite flank. This front three focuses on making runs in behind to punish any high defensive line. The formation encourages the midfielders to arrive late into the box to support the forwards.

This setup offers significant numerical superiority in midfield, making it difficult for opponents to find passing lanes. The presence of Baggio and Djorkaeff allows Inter to combine in tight spaces and quickly switch play to the wide areas. Using a narrow defensive block with such a heavy midfield presence allows the team to win it back high up the pitch.
