Inter Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Lorenzo BUFFON · Jocelyn ANGLOMA · Dario SIMIC · Daniel PASSARELLA · Matthias SAMMER · Patrick VIEIRA · Salvatore BAGNI · ADRIANO · Aldo SERENA · Alvaro RECOBA · Ivan ZAMORANOInter relies on a direct and aggressive style of play using a 5-2-3 formation. This lineup is built to win the ball back high up the pitch and hit opponents in transition. The team looks to stretch the defence by using wide players to create space for the central striker.
Lorenzo Buffon starts in goal to command his area. The defensive unit operates with a back five that can shift to provide cover across the width of the pitch. Matthias Sammer and Patrick Vieira act as the central defenders, where Sammer uses his aerial strength to win headers while Vieira covers the space behind. Daniel Angloma plays as an attacking wing back on the right to provide width, while Dario Simic operates on the left as a defensive wing back. Daniel Passarella sits in the center to organize the line and step up to intercept passes.
The midfield consists of a two man pairing to manage the center of the pitch. Salvatore Bagni and Alvaro Recoba occupy the central spaces to connect the back line to the forwards. Bagni works to shield the defence and win the second ball, while Recoba looks to carry the ball forward and play through the lines. This duo must press in a mid block to prevent the opposition from playing out from the back easily.
The attack features three players across the front to pin the opposition. Adriano acts as a powerful pressing centre forward who can hold up the ball to bring others into play. On the wings, Ivan Zamorano and Aldo Serena act as inverted wingers who cut inside to attack the near post or find space in the box. This movement creates room for the wing backs to overlap and deliver crosses into the area.
One major advantage for Inter is the ability to create wide overloads when Angloma and Simic push high. The team also gains numerical superiority in the attacking third when the wingers cut inside, leaving the defenders to deal with the runs of Adriano. The ability to transition quickly from a mid block to a direct attack makes them very dangerous.
This 5-2-3 formation provides Inter with a strong defensive base and rapid attacking transitions. It is best suited for games against teams that play with a high line and leave space behind their defenders.
