FC Porto Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Andrew · Pérez · Otávio · Martim · Lelo · Tomás · Fujimoto · Vasco · Silva · Félix · GülFC Porto aims to play a high press and heavy transition game through a 5-2-3 formation. This lineup works to win the ball high up the pitch and use the width of the field to stretch the opponent. The goal is to use the heavy presence in the wide areas to create quick attacking chances.
Andrew sits between the posts to command the area. The defensive unit works as a back five where Tomás acts as the central defender to hold the line and win headers. Otávio plays as the left centre back to cover space, while Pérez serves as the right centre back. On the flanks, Lelo operates as an attacking wing back on the left and Martim pushes up as the right wing back. This group can drop into a low block to deny space or step up to squeeze the space when the team presses.
The midfield functions as a double pivot designed to control the center. Fujimoto and Vasco operate in the middle to connect the defensive line to the front three. Fujimoto looks to win the second ball and recycle possession, while Vasco works to carry the ball forward and link play. This duo must stay compact to prevent the opposition from playing through the lines.
In the attacking phase, the team uses three attackers to pin the last defender. Gül acts as the lone striker to hold up the ball and find the feet of his teammates. On the wings, Félix plays as an inverted winger on the left to cut inside, while Silva stays wide on the right to cross. This setup creates runs in behind and looks to exploit one on one situations against full backs. The front three also press the opposition back line to force a long ball.
FC Porto gains a major advantage through wide overloads when Martim and Lelo push high to support the wingers. The formation also allows for great compactness when defending in a mid-block. The ability to transition quickly from a back five to a wide attacking shape makes them difficult to track.
This 5-2-3 lineup is built to dominate wide areas and strike with speed. It is best suited for facing teams that play with a high defensive line or leave space behind their full backs.
