Iran National Football Team Formation
Starting Lineup
H.HOSSEINI (23) · SOORI (2) · MOJTABA (14) · H.HASANI (3) · AKBARI (4) · DERAKHSH (5) · MASH (9) · SAHAND (20) · A.ARYANI (7(C)) · ZARE (10) · J.RAMEZANI (8)Iran relies on a compact defensive identity with a 4-5-1 formation. This lineup is built to sit deep and win the ball back through a mid-block, prioritizing defensive stability over heavy possession. The team looks to absorb pressure from the opposition and use a solitary striker to lead the transition.
H.HOSSEINI guards the goal while the back four remains narrow to protect the central zones. SOORI plays as the right back to cover the flank, while AKBARI operates on the left to help the defensive unit. MOJTABA and H.HASANI act as the central defenders, working together to win the second ball and clear the lines when under pressure. The defensive unit stays close to maintain a compact shape and prevent through balls.
The midfield contains five players working to congest the center of the pitch. SAHAND and DERAKHSH form a double pivot to shield the defense and break up play. In front of them, MASH, A.ARYANI, and ZARE operate in the half-spaces to connect the lines. MASH and ZARE act as the central midfielders to press aggressively, while A.ARYANI works to receive the ball and progress through the thirds. This five man group makes it hard for opponents to play through the middle.
Up front, J.RAMEZANI works as a lone striker to lead the line. He must hold up the ball and wait for the midfielders to push up during transitions. The team builds the attack by using the wide midfielders to stretch the defense, looking to whip it in or find the feet of the striker. J.RAMEZANI also presses the opposition back line to force a long ball, allowing the midfield to regain possession.
One major advantage for Iran is the numerical superiority in the central midfield, which makes it very difficult for opponents to find passing lanes. The formation also provides great compactness when defending, forcing the opposition to play wide and away from the goal. This setup allows the team to stay organized and resist heavy attacks.
This 4-5-1 formation provides a solid platform for a team that wants to defend deep and strike on the break. It is best suited for facing technically gifted sides that dominate possession.
