Starting Lineup

Liverpool relies on a direct and aggressive attacking identity using a 4-2-4 formation. This lineup is built to overwhelm the opposition with high numbers in the final third and quick verticality. Grobbelaar operates between the posts to command the area. The back line works as a flat back four with Nicol at right back and R. Kennedy at left back. Hansen and Lawrenson form the central defensive pair, where Hansen acts as a ball playing defender to start attacks and Lawrenson provides cover. The defenders must hold a high line to squeeze the space and ensure the distance between the units remains small during the press.

In the middle of the pitch, Liverpool utilizes a double pivot consisting of Souness and Molby. Souness acts as the engine to win the second ball and drive the ball forward, while Molby provides technical quality to pass through the lines and link the defense to the attack. This midfield pairing must work hard to protect the back four, with one player often dropping deeper to shield the center backs while the other looks to progress the ball into the attacking zones.

The attacking unit is extremely potent with four players tasked with stretching the defense. Barnes and Whelan play as wide wingers who spread the play wide to create room in the middle. Dalglish operates as a deep lying forward who can drop into the pockets of space to combine with the midfield, while Rush acts as the primary striker to run in behind the defense. This four-man front line is designed to create constant movement, using overlaps from the full backs to pin the last defender.

This formation offers several tactical advantages for Liverpool. The main strength is the ability to create numerical superiority in the attacking third, making it very difficult for a back four to track all the runners. Additionally, the heavy presence of Barnes and Whelan allows the team to isolate wide players in one on one situations. The setup also allows for a very high press, as the four attackers can trigger a press from the front to force a long ball.
