Starting Lineup

Kimmich · Davies · Goretzka · Laimer · Kim · Upamecano · Kane · Musiala · Gnabry · Sané · Neuer

FC Bayern focuses on high pressing and heavy verticality in this 2-5-3 formation. The lineup is built to win the ball back high up the pitch and move the play forward quickly toward the goal. This setup aims to control the middle of the pitch by flooding the central areas with players to overwhelm the opponent.

Manuel Neuer acts as the goalkeeper in a system that relies on a high line. Behind the two central defenders, Kim and Upamecano, the team plays with very little cover. Kim provides aerial strength while Upamecano covers space and uses his speed to track runners. Because there are only two defenders, they must step up to squeeze the space and prevent the opposition from playing through the lines.

The midfield is a five man unit designed to control the tempo and dominate the center. Kimmich sits as a deep lying playmaker, often dropping to help the defense while looking to switch play. Davies operates as an attacking left midfielder who can push high to add width, while Laimer and Goretzka work as two central midfielders to win the second ball and press aggressively. Musiala plays as an attacking ten behind the striker, using his dribbling style to find pockets of space and create chances. This midfield connection ensures the team can progress through the thirds with ease.

In the attacking third, FC Bayern uses three attackers to stretch the defense. Kane plays as a lone striker and a target man who can hold up the ball and link up play between the lines. Sané and Gnabry act as inverted wingers who cut inside to shoot or create, leaving space for the wide midfielders to exploit. The movement of these players is designed to create runs in behind and isolate defenders in one on one situations.

One major advantage of this formation is the numerical superiority in midfield, which allows the team to dominate possession and recycle possession quickly. The ability to press high in coordinated waves makes it very difficult for opponents to build from the back. Additionally, the presence of Musiala and Kane creates a central threat that forces the opposition to stay narrow.

This formation provides a heavy offensive presence that is perfect for dominating games against teams that sit deep. It is a high risk lineup best used when the team needs to break down a defensive block through sheer volume of players in the final third.
