Japan National Football Team Formation
Starting Lineup
K.Ōsako · W.Endo (C) · A.Ueda · K.Mitoma · T.Kubo · K.Itakura · H.Ito · T.Tomiyasu · H.Morita · R.Doan · T.MinaminoJapan looks to play a high press with a very vertical style of football using a 3-4-3. The lineup is built to win the ball high up the pitch and move quickly through the thirds to catch opponents out of position. This formation allows the team to squeeze the space in the middle and create many passing lanes for the attacking players.
K.Ōsako stays between the posts to organize the back line. The defense uses a back three consisting of K.Itakura, T.Tomiyasu, and H.Ito. T.Tomiyasu plays as the right centre-back and is dominant in the air, while H.Ito acts as the left centre-back to cover the wide areas. K.Itakura sits in the middle to sweep behind the line and organize the zonal line. The unit works together to maintain a high line and trigger a press as soon as the ball enters their half.
The midfield functions as a double pivot to control the center of the pitch. Captain W.Endo shields the defense and works to win the second ball, while H.Morita acts as a carrier to drive forward with the ball and connect the defensive and attacking lines. On the flanks, R.Doan and K.Mitoma operate as two tens in the half-spaces. K.Mitoma uses his dribbling style to beat his man and push the play forward, whereas R.Doan looks to create from deep and switch play to find the attackers.
In the final third, Japan uses three attackers to stretch the defense. A.Ueda acts as a pressing centre-forward to pin the last defender and hold up the ball for others. T.Kubo plays as an inverted winger on the right to cut inside and create chances, while T.Minamino plays on the left to look for runs in behind. The team builds in triangles to move the ball through tight spaces and uses the width provided by the wide players to isolate one on one situations.
One major strength of this Japan lineup is the ability to press high in coordinated waves to force a long ball. The double pivot of W.Endo and H.Morita provides numerical superiority in midfield against teams playing a two man unit. Additionally, the combination of T.Kubo and T.Minamino allows the team to attack in transition with great speed.
This 3-4-3 formation creates a heavy offensive presence that can overwhelm opponents. It is best suited for games where the team needs to dominate possession and attack a low block with high intensity.
