Marzolini and Zanetti provide the necessary width, pushing high to support the attack and tracking back to defend the flanks when the team loses possession.

The midfield uses a two man central pairing to control the tempo. Veron connects the defensive and attacking lines, often dropping deep to receive the ball and progress through the thirds. Beside him, Maradona operates with high pressing intensity and incredible dribbling style to create chances. This duo must work to compress the midfield and win the second ball to ensure the team remains compact when the opposition tries to play through the center.

Argentina utilizes three attackers to stretch the defence. Kempes acts as a pressing centre forward, leading the line to harass the opposition back line. Di Maria and Messi operate as wide attackers, with Di Maria cutting inside to find space and Messi looking to isolate a one on one wide or carry the ball forward. The movement is designed to create runs in behind and allow Messi and Di Maria to combine in tight spaces to find Kempes.

One major advantage is the ability to create wide overloads when Marzolini and Zanetti push forward to overlap the wingers. Argentina can also achieve numerical superiority in midfield when the wing backs move inside to support Maradona and Veron. This lineup allows for a very fast speed of transition once the ball is won in the middle third.
