São Paulo Football Formation
Starting Lineup
RAFAEL · ARBOLEDA · FRANCO · SABINO · VINÍCIUS · WENDELL · L. GUSTAVO · ALISSON · M. ANTÔNIO · LUCIANO · CALLERISão Paulo aims to dominate through a heavy high press and quick transitions using a 3-5-2 formation. This lineup is built to win the ball back high up the pitch and use the central density to overwhelm opponents. The team looks to control the middle of the park while maintaining enough numbers to stay compact when the ball is lost.
RAFAEL operates between the posts to organize the back line. The defensive unit functions as a back three where ARBOLEDA acts as the right centre-back with great aerial strength and ability to cover wide spaces. SABINO plays as the left centre-back and FRANCO occupies the central spot to anchor the defense. This trio works to defend zonally and ensure they stay close together to squeeze the space between the lines.
The midfield is a dense block designed to dominate the center. ALISSON acts as a deep lying playmaker to help play short from the back and recycle possession. L. GUSTAVO works alongside him to shield the defense and pick up runners. In the more advanced areas, WENDELL and VINÍCIUS occupy the half spaces to connect the defensive and attacking lines. M. ANTÔNIO plays as an attacking ten behind the striker to press aggressively and find the feet of the striker during build up play.
The attack relies on a partnership of two forwards. CALLERI works as the main target man, using his strength to hold up the ball and win the header. LUCIANO plays as the second striker in the hole, looking to make runs in behind or arrive late into the box. They work in combinations to pull the opposition defenders out of position, often looking to exploit the space created when the midfielders push forward.
One major strength of this São Paulo lineup is the numerical superiority in midfield which allows the team to control the rhythm of the game. The formation also provides the ability to press high in coordinated waves, making it very difficult for opponents to play out from the back. This setup allows the players to quickly shift from a defensive block to an attacking transition.
This 3-5-2 formation is designed to suffocate opponents through central dominance and high pressure. It is best suited for games against teams that struggle to bypass a heavy midfield press.
