Athletic relies on high intensity and verticality with a 4-2-4 formation. The identity of the team centers on winning the ball high up the pitch and striking with speed. This lineup is built to overwhelm the opposition in transition and pin the opponent back in their own half.

UnaiSimón acts as the goalkeeper to command the area and sweep behind the line. The defensive unit functions as a flat back four where DeMarcos and Yuri provide the width. UNúñez and Yeray occupy the central roles to hold the line. Yeray uses his aerial strength to win the header and clear the lines, while UNúñez stays close to the target man to deny the turn. The back four works to squeeze the space and set the offside trap whenever the team plays a high line.

The midfield works as a double pivot consisting of Prados and Jauregizar. These two players must cover massive amounts of ground to shield the defense and stop breakaways. Prados works to intercept passes and protect the central zone, while Jauregizar tries to carry the ball forward to connect the defensive unit with the attack. They are responsible for recycling possession and making sure the team can transition from a defensive block to an attacking stance without losing control of the center.

In the attacking phase, the team uses four attackers to stretch the defence. NicoWilliams and Williams operate as wide wingers who look to cut inside and use their dribbling style to beat defenders. Berenguer and Maroan form a central partnership in the box. One of them often acts as a pressing centre-forward to force the opposition to play long balls, while the other looks to find the feet of the striker or make runs in behind. The aim is to use the width to isolate wide players in one on one situations and then whip it in to the central duo.

One major advantage of this 4-2-4 formation is the ability to press high in coordinated waves. By placing four players near the opposition defense, Athletic can win the ball back high up the pitch and attack quickly. Another strength is the speed of transition, as the wide players are ready to sprint into space the moment possession is regained. This creates constant pressure and forces the opponent to sit deep in a low block.

This formation is a direct and aggressive system designed to dominate through physical presence and speed. It is best suited for matches against teams that struggle to defend against rapid attacks and wide overloads.
