Starting Lineup

Arsenal play with a heavy defensive focus using a 5-4-1 formation. This lineup is built to sit deep and absorb pressure before looking to hit teams on the break. The primary goal is to remain compact and hard to break down while waiting for the right moment to strike.

Isak stays between the posts to manage the defensive line. The back five consists of Merino, Ødegaard, and Rice, who form a central trio. Merino acts as a ball playing defender, while Rice provides aerial strength and covers the space behind. Saka and Martinelli operate as attacking wing backs, ready to push up the flanks to provide width. This unit works to keep the lines tight and prevent through balls.

The midfield works as a flat four to squeeze the space in the middle. Calafiori occupies the right side of the midfield to help link the play, while Timber stays on the left to protect the flank. Gabriel and Saliba play as the two central midfielders, with Saliba acting as a carrier to drive the ball forward. Gabriel is tasked to win the second ball and intercept passes to move the team from defense to attack.

Raya leads the line as a lone striker, tasked to hold up the ball and bring others into play. The attack relies on the movement of Saka and Martinelli to provide width and deliver crosses. When Arsenal win the ball back high up the pitch, the team looks to hit in behind on the transition. The forwards must press the opposition back line to force a long ball and regain possession quickly.

This 5-4-1 formation provides great compactness when defending in a low block. Arsenal can use the speed of transition to exploit gaps left by an attacking opponent. The ability to use the wing backs to create wide overloads allows the team to stretch the defence once they move into the final third.
