Arsenal Football Formation
Starting Lineup
Saka · Havertz · Martinelli · Odegaard · Party · Declan Rice · Magalhaes · Timber · Saliba · R. Calafiori · David RayaDominating the pitch through intense pressure is the main goal for Arsenal in this 4-5-1 formation. The Gunners want to win the ball back high up the pitch and maintain control through ball possession. This lineup is built to press from the front and keep the opposition pinned in their own half.
David Raya starts in goal, playing short from the back to help build play. The defense uses a flat back four with Timber at right back and R. Calafiori at left back. Saliba and Magalhaes operate as the central defenders, with Saliba using his aerial strength and defensive positioning to lead the line. The full backs are tasked to step up and support the midfield while the center backs hold the line and defend zonally to prevent runs in behind.
In the center of the pitch, Party and Declan Rice form a double pivot to shield the defense. Rice uses his high pressing intensity and ability to carry the ball forward to drive the team into the next phase. Odegaard plays as the central link, using his passing range to break the line and find the forwards. Saka and Martinelli operate in the half-spaces, pressing aggressively to win the ball back in a mid-block or high press.
Havertz acts as the lone striker and serves as a pressing centre-forward to disrupt the opposition. Saka and Martinelli provide the width, often cutting inside to create a central presence. This movement allows the full backs to overlap and deliver crosses into the box. The team focuses on link-up play between the lines and looks to hit in behind on the transition when space opens up to catch the defense.
A primary strength of this formation is the ability to press high in coordinated waves, making it difficult for opponents to play out from the back. The midfield also gains numerical superiority through the presence of Odegaard alongside the pivot. This creates many options to recycle possession and find ways to split the defense with a through ball or a quick pass to find the attackers.
This 4-5-1 formation creates a very hard unit to break down through its compactness and control. It is perfectly suited for games where the team needs to squeeze the space and dominate a possession based opponent.
