Starting Lineup

Angelo Stiller (J. Fazzini) · T Reijnders (W. Bondo) · Samuele Ricci (Youssouf Fofana) · Rafa Leao (B. Dominguez) · Pulisic (R. Orsolini) · Tammy Abraham (Santiago Gimenez) · Theo (J. Hadjam) · Walker (Jimenez) · Maignan (Sportiello) · C. Mosquera (Pavlovic) · Comuzzo (Gabbia)

Focusing on defensive solidity and rapid transitions, Milan utilizes a 5-2-3 formation. This lineup is built to hit opponents on the break once the ball is won in the middle third.

Maignan acts as the goalkeeper to anchor the defensive unit. The back line operates as a back five with Samuele Ricci acting as the central defender to hold the line and cover his teammates. Comuzzo and C. Mosquera function as wide centre-backs to protect the half-spaces. Theo operates as an attacking wing back on the left to push high up the pitch while Walker provides similar width on the right. This defensive unit works to defend zonally and ensures they remain compact.

In the middle of the pitch, Milan employs a two-man midfield. Angelo Stiller works to recycle possession and connects the defensive and attacking lines from a deeper position, often dropping between the centre-backs to receive. T Reijnders plays as a carrier to drive forward with the ball and make late runs into the box to support the attack.

The attack features three players positioned across the front. Tammy Abraham works as a lone striker to hold up the ball and find the feet of his teammates. Rafa Leao plays on the left as an inverted winger to cut inside and run in behind, while Pulisic operates on the right to stretch the defence and look for one-on-one situations. The wingers often pull wide to create space for the wing backs to overlap and deliver crosses into the box or whip it in towards the near post.

One major strength is the ability to create wide overloads as Theo and Walker push high to support the front three. The team also benefits from the speed of transition when they win the ball and look to hit the opposition on the break. This formation allows Milan to stay compact when defending a lead or a heavy spell of pressure by squeezing the space in the middle.

The 5-2-3 formation provides a strong base for teams that want to absorb pressure and strike on the counter. It is ideal for facing high pressing opponents who leave large gaps in the wide areas.
