Cruyff plays as an attacking ten, finding pockets of space to receive on the half turn and play through the lines to the front line.

The front line uses three attackers to stretch the defence. van Basten acts as a central striker who can hold up the ball and win the header. Bergkamp plays as an inverted winger on the left, looking to cut inside and create chances. On the right, Robben looks to isolate his man and drive at the defence. This attack moves in combinations, with Bergkamp and Cruyff combining in tight spaces to split the defence with a through ball.

This formation offers massive numerical superiority in the midfield. By having five players in the middle, the Red Devils can easily compress the midfield and win the second ball. Another advantage is the ability to press high in coordinated waves, where the front three and Cruyff trigger a press from the front. This forces the opposition to play long balls which the defenders can win.
