Starting Lineup

Arsenal prioritizes a high press and quick transitions through a 5-2-3 formation. This lineup focuses on winning the ball high up the pitch to catch the opposition out of position. The Gunners aim to control the game by squeezing the space in the middle and using wide players to stretch the defence.

Raya operates as the goalkeeper, providing a reliable presence behind the defensive line. The back five features a central trio consisting of Partey, Saliba, and Kiwior. Saliba acts as a ball playing defender who can cover space, while Kiwior and Partey support the central zone. The wide defenders, White as the RWB and Timber as the LWB, are tasked to push high and provide width. White and Timber must track back to prevent counters while also being ready to overlap the attackers.

A two man midfield acts as the engine room for Arsenal. Rice works as a ball winner to shield the defence and break up play, often dropping deep to help the back line. Odegaard operates in the right half space, looking to create from deep and find passing lanes into the final third. These two link the defensive unit to the front three, with Rice often winning the second ball to allow Odegaard to carry the ball forward.

The attacking front line uses three attackers to pressure the opposition back line. Merino plays as the lone striker, acting as a target man to hold up the ball and link play. Saka works as an inverted winger on the right, looking to cut inside and create chances, while Martinelli operates on the left. Martinelli uses his pace to make runs in behind the defence. This trio works together to press from the front, forcing the opposition into mistakes.

This formation offers significant advantages such as wide overloads when White and Timber push up to support the wingers. The team can also create numerical superiority in midfield when the wingers tuck inside. The compactness of the back five makes it difficult for opponents to find space between the lines, forcing them to play wide where they can be easily marked.
