Liverpool Football Formation
Starting Lineup
ALISSON · VAN DIJK · CARRAGHER · HYYPIA · ROBERTSON · XABI ALONSO · MCMANAMAN · GERRARD · SALAH · SUAREZ · TORRESLiverpool plays with a highly vertical identity in a 4-2-4 formation. Such a lineup is built to overwhelm opponents with high pressing and rapid transitions. The team focuses on getting many bodies forward to win the ball back high up the pitch and break the line quickly through direct play.
ALISSON stays in goal to command the area and sweep behind the defence. The back line operates in a flat back four with HYYPIA at right back and ROBERTSON at left back. Both HYYPIA and ROBERTSON act as attacking wing backs to push up and provide width. In the center, VAN DIJK uses his aerial strength and passing range as a ball playing defender to defend and play out from the back. CARRAGHER sits alongside him to cover the space and hold the line against runners.
The midfield relies on a double pivot to control the center of the pitch. XABI ALONSO acts as a deep lying playmaker with an exceptional passing range to switch play and find the forwards. MCMANAMAN works alongside him to carry the ball forward and win the second ball in the middle third. These two players must work hard to squeeze the space, recycle possession, and connect the defence to the front four.
The front four provides an intense attacking presence. SALAH acts as an inverted winger on the right to cut inside, while SUAREZ works on the left to stretch the defence. GERRARD and TORRES operate as the central duo. TORRES looks to run in behind the opposition back line, while GERRARD plays as a central forward to arrive late into the box and link up play. An intense press from the front forces a long ball from the opposition.
Liverpool gains a massive advantage through wide overloads when HYYPIA and ROBERTSON overlap the winger. The formation also allows the team to hit in behind on the transition using the speed of TORRES and SALAH. By playing with four attackers, the team can spread wide and create more room for the midfielders to progress through the thirds. Constant pressure makes it difficult for opponents to build play.
This 4-2-4 formation is a heavy attacking lineup that relies on high intensity. It is best suited for games where the team needs to overwhelm a low block with constant pressure and vertical runs.
