Lecce relies on a compact way of playing with a 4-5-1 formation. This lineup is built to play a defensive game that prioritizes squeezing the space between the lines to frustrate the opponent. The goal is to stay organized and win the second ball to initiate quick transitions.

The goalkeeper 1 organizes the back line from the edge of the area. A flat back four includes 6 at left back, 2 at right back, and the central pairing of 4 and 3. The central defenders 4 and 3 are tasked to defend zonally and protect the middle. Full backs 6 and 2 are expected to track back and cover the wide areas, while ensuring they do not leave gaps behind them. The whole unit works to hold the line and keep the distance between the defense and the midfield very tight.

The midfield is a five man block designed to dominate the central areas. A double pivot consisting of 5 and 7 works to shield the defense and intercept passes before they reach the back four. In front of them, 8, 10, and 11 occupy the half spaces to connect the defensive and attacking lines. 10 works to recycle possession, while 8 and 11 press in a mid-block to win the ball back high up the pitch. This midfield density allows the team to control the tempo and move the ball through the thirds.

The attacking side features a lone striker, 9, who acts as a pressing centre-forward. Because 9 is isolated, he must be able to hold up the ball and wait for support. The team looks to attack in transition, hoping to hit in behind the opposition defense after a turnover. 8, 10, and 11 will carry the ball forward or make late runs into the box to support the lone man. This creates combinations in tight spaces to break the line.

One major advantage is the numerical superiority in midfield which makes it hard for opponents to play through the middle. Lecce also benefits from the compactness when defending in a mid-block, making it difficult for the opposition to find space. The speed of transition allows the team to move from a defensive posture to an attacking one very quickly.

This 4-5-1 formation is a way to control the game through defensive discipline and collective movement. It is best suited for matches against teams that want to keep possession, allowing Lecce to sit deep and strike on the break.
